ETX gas station posts card skimmer deterrent

Murphy USA at the Walmart on Troup Highway in Tyler has placed signs warning against card skimming at the gas pumps.

TYLER — A Tyler gas station is saying no more to card skimming.

"Over the last two-years, East Texas has seen an increase in cases of credit card skimmers at gas stations," said Detective Jeff Roberts with the Tyler Police Department.

He credits the increase though to "good investigative work" and not necessarily more people compromising gas pumps.

"We're educating gas stations, we're educating consumers, the banks are communicating with us," Roberts said.

Gas stations like the Murphy USA at the Walmart on Troup Highway in Tyler are starting to take preventative steps to stop credit card skimmers.

"Over all we see most of the large corporations and gas stations really keen on trying to do things to protect the consumers," Roberts said.

These gas pumps at Murphy USA warn people that if opened, an alarm will sound and the pump will shut down immediately.

Roberts said some gas stations are taking another approach though by installing new pumps to get the latest technology.

"It's encrypted and it shuts down whenever the suspects try to tamper with the pumps," Roberts said.

Because people may not know if a credit card skimmer has been attached to a pump, Roberts advises people to sign up for banking alerts.

Detective Roberts also recommends that people set alerts for every time their card is used, to be aware of all transactions.

By setting those alerts, people are more likely to identify any potential fraud immediately and get their cards shut off before more damage is done.
