LUFKIN, Texas — The Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin is mourning the loss of a cherished white rhinoceros that died Wednesday night from a bacterial disease.
Paddy, a female Southern White Rhinoceros, arrived in September 2014 as a mate for the male, Bwana.
Paddy was under veterinary supervision at the time of her death. There will be a complete necropsy performed by the Texas A&M University to determine an exact cause of death.
"She had a personality of her own and could be quite cooperative or, sometimes, a bit cantankerous," the zoo said in a statement.
Paddy was 29 years and 7 months old when she passed away.
