ELECTION PREVIEW: Republican primary race for Smith County sheriff

Incumbent Sheriff Larry Smith, who has lead the Smith County Sheriff's Office since 2013, is facing challenger Chris Green, a longtime Texas Game Warden.

TYLER, Texas — The race for Smith County sheriff in 2024 has two candidates in the Republican primary. 

Incumbent Sheriff Larry Smith, who has lead the Smith County Sheriff's Office since 2013, is facing challenger Chris Green, a longtime Texas Game Warden. Smith is seeking his fourth term as sheriff. 

Smith has over 37 years experience in local and federal law enforcement with almost 16 years supervisory experience in local and federal law enforcement. 

Green has served in law enforcement for over 30 years, including 20 years as an active Texas Game Warden and over a decade as a Reserve Special Game Warden. Green ran against Smith in 2012 and 2016, and he lost to Smith both times. 

There is no Democratic challenger in this race. 

Early voting begins Feb. 20 and runs for just under two weeks. Election Day is March 5. For more information about voting hours and locations, click here.
