3 East Texas siblings killed, father injured in crash

Rains ISD identified the children as students within the district.

GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas — Three children are dead following a crash in Grayson County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on Friday around 7:20 p.m., troopers responded to a three-vehicle crash on US 69, near Penny Rd.

The preliminary investigation indicated a Hyundai Elantra, driven by Hyrum Grandy, 40, of Lone Oak, was traveling south. At the same time, a Ford F-150, driven by Angel Martinez, 34, of Celest, was also headed south -- two vehicles ahead of the Elantra. A Chevy Silverado, driven by Lane Recer, 29, of Trenton, was driving north, simultaneously.

As the vehicles began to slow down, DPS says Hyrum Grandy veered onto the shoulder of the road to avoid a collision with the vehicle in front of him.  Hyrum Grandy then got back into the southbound lane, hit Martinez's truck and went into the northbound lane. Hyrum Grandy's vehicle was then struck on the left side by Recer's truck.

Three children who were in Hyrum Grandy's car were killed as a result of the crash.

The children were identified as:

  • Amara Grandy, 13
  • Alexander Grandy, 14
  • Alvin Grandy, 10

Rains ISD identified the children as students within the district.

"Wildcat Nation,

It is with great sadness and a broken heart that I share with you we have lost 3 of our young wildcats. Xander and Amara were both wonderful student-athletes that represented what it means to be a Wildcat. We ask that you keep this family as well as all of Rains ISD in your prayers as we move forward. God give us the strength to comfort our many kiddos as we navigate through such a tragedy."

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the Gandy family following their loss. RISD will have counselors in the district Tuesday to help staff support students impacted by the tragedy.

According to family members, Hyrum Gandy was injured, but was released from the hospital on Saturday.

The crash remains under investigation.
