TYLER, Texas — An East Texas stretch of road has been named among the most congested roadways in the state.
It's a roadway filled with traffic that drivers, especially those in Tyler, may be familiar with - most notably during the holidays.
According to a study from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, South Broadway Ave. in Tyler from West Southwest Loop 323 to Toll 49 ranked as number 87 among the top 100 congested roadways in Texas in 2023. It's the only roadway in East Texas to be a part of the list.
The study states the annual congestion cost for this part of S. Broadway Ave. is over $15.6 million. This roadway has ranked as number 47 in the past.
The Transportation Institute website states there are no corridor specific improvements planned, but it does mention projects for parallel corridor improvements, such as an expansion of FM 756 (Paluxy Drive) and an expansion of Old Jacksonville Highway (FM 2493).
Widening FM 756 (Paluxy Drive) in Tyler from Jeff Davis Drive south to FM 344 would take the roadway from two lanes to four and have a continuous left turn lane. A grade separated interchange is also proposed at the intersection of FM 756 and FM 346. The completion date is unknown.
Plans for the Old Jacksonville expansion would take the highway from four lanes with continuous left turn lane to six lanes with raised medians. A grade separated interchange is proposed at the Grande Boulevard intersection. The completion date is unknown.
