East Texas pet food company expands recall due to potential salmonella contamination in products

As of Nov. 1, seven people had reported salmonella infections. The voluntary recall is being done in collaboration with the FDA.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas — Mid America Pet Food in Mount Pleasant announced the company is adding to its list of voluntary recalls after learning products may have been contaminated with salmonella.

The original recall was put into place on Oct. 30, 2023, and now the voluntary recall includes pet foods with best by dates before Oct. 31. 2024.

Voluntarily recalled brands from the Mount Pleasant facility include: Victor Super Premium Dog Foods, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food, and some Member’s Mark varieties with best by dates before Oct. 31. 2024.

According to the company announcement posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website, salmonella can affect animals eating the products as well as humans who may handle the product, especially if their hands are not thoroughly washed. 

Healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Those experiencing signs of infection should contact their health care providers. Children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems may be at a greater risk. Pets who are infected with salmonella might feel lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, the announcement read. 

If your pet has eaten the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
