TYLER, Texas — Eating healthy and working out are always among the top resolutions when kicking off a new year. But just as physical health is important so is mental health.
Navigating mental health and seeking help can be daunting.
"Mental health varies from anxiety, PTSD, to bipolar, major depression and schizophrenia," said Chase Rodgers, director of Longview ministries at Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.
Hiway Rescue Mission, located in Longview and Tyler, provides food, shelter, clothing and a resource guide medical care, including local free or low-cost mental health services.
Rodgers said there are several resources available like Community Healthcore and Special Health Resources.
Despite the resources, Rodgers cautioned that new patients may have to wait to get the help they need. He said it can take weeks to months before receiving treatment.
Erica Guzman, director of mental health programs at the nonprofit Next Step Community Solutions, said there are ways to improve a person's mental health if they can't see a doctor. She suggested journaling, yoga, mindfulness or physical exercise.
Guzman said when it comes to resources in Tyler there are quite a few to pick from.
"There’s yoga, there’s counseling services. there’s also clinics where they can help you find counselors or just medication that helps with your mental health," Guzman said.
For those hesitant to reach out, Rodgers and Guzman have this message -- take the first step and seek help.
"It is OK to not be OK. There’s resources in the community you can call hotlines there’s a suicide prevention line where you can call and they can help you with basically anything." Guzman said.
If you or someone you know struggles with depression or suicidal thoughts, call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
