GILMER, Texas — An East Texas man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for murdering his father last March.

Michael Timothy Caffey, 45, was found guilty of murder Thursday in connection with the death of Timothy Allen Caffey, 66, of Gilmer, following a two-day jury trial in Upshur County. After the guilty verdict, he was sentenced to life in prison, Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said.

The trial started Wednesday and concluded Thursday afternoon. Byrd said Michael Caffey will not be eligible for parole until he has served 30 years in prison.

The sheriff's office said Timothy Caffey shared the home where his body was found with Michael Caffey. However, Michael Caffey could not be found when his father's body was discovered.

Deputies later located Michael Caffey that same day wandering the streets and walking onto residential properties in Liberty City. He was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant out of Gregg County and later charged with murder.

The sheriff's office said deputies were able to identify evidence linking Michael Caffey to his father's death.
