East Texas man accused of sexually assaulting, trafficking young teen multiple times arrested

Birdwell was moved to the Gregg County Jail on Monday as part of an agreement that the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office has with other agencies.

GREGG COUNTY, Texas — An East Texas man accused of sexually assaulting a young teenager multiple times within a year was arrested last month.

According to Gregg County judicial records, Jonathan Birdwell, 44, of Cushing, was arrested on the following charges:

  • Sexual assault of a child (5 counts)
  • Trafficking of a child to engage in sexual conduct (5 counts)

The arrests stemmed from warrants out of Nacogdoches County

According to the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office, Birdwell was originally arrested on July 16 for warrants related to allegations of sexually assaulted a teen on at least five occasions in the past year. Evidence showed Birdwell drove the teen from their residence to another location during these incidents. The investigation began when the teen made an outcry in the early morning hours of July 16.

His bonds were set at $625,000.

Birdwell was moved to the Gregg County Jail on Monday as part of an agreement that the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office has with other agencies in East Texas to assist when the Nacogdoches County Jail is at or near capacity.

"Likewise, when we have availability, we may house inmates for other counties if necessary," the NCSO said. "This is an ongoing investigation."
