Police: East Texas man accused of shooting mother of his children in the face in August arrested

The victim told police that before the shooting she and Xavier Young had gotten into an argument over a text message from a woman on his phone, the affidavit read.

TYLER, Texas — A Flint man was arrested last week for accusations of shooting the mother of his children at her Tyler apartment in August, police documents show.

Xavier Keith Young, 21, was booked into the Smith County Jail on Dec. 15 on aggravated aggravated with a deadly weapon in connection with an Aug. 26 shooting that left a woman with gunshot wounds to her face and leg. He remains jailed on a $1 million bond.

According to an arrest affidavit, the shooting happened at an apartment complex in the 5600 block of Old Bullard Rd in Tyler. The victim told police she was shot by a male intruder who entered through her balcony sliding glass door.

Young's sister, who is friends with the victim, told the officer Young is the father of the victim's three young children, who police say were in the apartment at the time of the shooting. After his sister left the victim's apartment in the morning, the victim, whose face was covered in blood, called the sister asking for help, the affidavit said.

The sister called 911 and came back to the apartment. She said Young comes and goes into the apartment from time to time, the affidavit explained.

Police used surveillance video to see a man getting dropped by what appeared to be a ride share driver. About an hour later, man was seen on video jumping over the ledge of the balcony walking south toward the dumpster in the parking lot. The officer determined both instances to have been the same man, who was later identified as Young, according to the affidavit.

While in the hospital, the victim told police she and Young had gotten into an argument over a text message from another woman on his phone. Later on, she was getting out of the shower when she heard someone at her backdoor. When she got up to see what it was, she heard a loud bang and felt something hit her ear, the document read.

She said she knew it was a man who shot her, but she didn't think it was Young, the affidavit said.

In an interview, the victim's mother identified Young as the man seen on the surveillance video. She also said there were holes in the walls and the damage inside the apartment from previous altercations between Young and her daughter, the affidavit stated.

Young was also arrested on an unrelated previous charge of engaging in organized crime, according to jail records.
