East Texas Lighthouse celebrates White Cane Day at Bergfeld Park

White Cane day was started by President Lyndon B. Johnson and celebrates the achievements of the blind and visually impaired using the symbol of the cane.

TYLER, Texas — The East Texas Lighthouse celebrated White Cane Day at Bergfeld Park on Friday.

White Cane day was started by President Lyndon B. Johnson and celebrates the achievements of the blind and visually impaired using the symbol of the cane. The white cane symbolizes several things to those who carry it— Craig Ellis, the community relations administrator for the East Texas Lighthouse, said the cane represents what makes him proud of the blind community's accomplishments.

"We're just trying to raise awareness about the white cane and its significance in the blind community," Ellis said. "Most people think the white cane. They see the white cane. They just think, well, the person's blind, and that's all they think. To that person using that cane, it represents independence, freedom, mobility and all things that are positive."

The East Texas Lighthouse creates opportunities for the blind community. Ellis said the organization allowed him to find success after he was unemployed for over three years after losing his vision.

"Had a great career, great resume, but couldn't get anybody to hire me because they found out I was legally blind and I couldn't drive, although I could do most of the jobs that I interviewed for," Ellis said. "I got a job at the East Texas Lighthouse. I didn't have a lot of computer skills. They taught me the computer skills and everything else that I need to be successful."

The event hosted vendors from the blind community and activities relating to blind accessibility, such as children's games that teach braille.

Transportation to East Texas Lighthouse events can be arranged for blind participants by calling 903-593-3111.
