Officials release more details on crash that killed East Texas high school graduate, current student in Smith County

According to Palestine ISD, recent PHS graduate Ju’Mija Clewis and soon-to-be-senior Sheriee Butler were two of the three people killed in the wreck.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Officials have released more information about a single-vehicle wreck that left three dead, including a recent Palestine High School graduate and soon-to-be senior, in Smith County early Sunday morning.

Raven M. Clewis, 19, of Dallas, was traveling north on FM 2661 when she left the roadway and struck a tree with the front end, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Raven Clewis was pronounced dead at the scene along with her passengers Ju’Mija Clewis, 17, of Elkhart, and Sheriee Butler, 17, of Palestine, DPS said. 

According to Palestine ISD, Ju’Mija Clewis is a recent PHS graduate and Butler is a soon-to-be-senior. 

"Please remember their families in your prayers as they move through this difficult time," PISD said.

Other passengers, Jaylah R. Spurlock, 17, of Palestine; Brianna S. Price, 17, of Palestine; and Chimsi Okonkwo, 16, were taken to a Tyler hospital for their injuries, DPS said. 

This investigation is ongoing.
