TYLER, Texas — A new year means new resolutions and for many that's creating a consistent fitness and diet plan.
Local gyms have started seeing an increase in East Texans seeking to stand by the "new year, new you" motto by improving and maintaining their health and wellness in 2024.
"I just want to maintain strength and endurance, I want to be able to play with my kids and keep up with them," gym goer Katherine Ugerceht said.
Ugerceht, a frequent member of the Tyler Athletic and Swim club, said her friends and family help her include fitness as a permanent part of her routine through accountability.
And she isn’t the only one seeking the gym in the new year.
Rob Lowe, manager at the Tyler Athletic and Swim Club, said they’ve seen a huge increase in people joining the fitness club in the last month.
"The uptick in memberships had been about 30 strong," Lowe said. "So a lot of people really starting to gravitate for a healthier new year and 2024."
According to the Global Health and Fitness Association, 12% of all gym memberships happen in January. But that’s only part of what it takes to be fit the other part is diet.
Johnny Barrera, owner and trainer at B-Fit Tyler, said sticking to a meal plan provided through Project Lean Nation in Tyler has helped him maintain a healthy lifestyle.
"Our goal with our clients is to combine both, and tried to find a way that they can stick to it with consistency and habits," Barrera said. "If you want results, you got to find a plan that you can stick to in the long run."
Karen Lively, a client at PLN, said she has seen positive results from the meal prep plan.
"After two weeks, I came in and use the in body scan, and I have lost weight and gain muscles," Lively said.
Lively said the body scan has been the biggest motivator in helping keep her in track with her fitness goals.
"Knowing you're going to come in every two to four weeks and you're going to see results whether they're good or bad. and that keeps you on track," said PLN trainer Michael Dakota.
Dakota said he’s seen an uptick in orders over the past few weeks. Personally, he has felt a lot better and more clean since using the PLN meals.
"These meals make it easier for me just to be able to take my food, eat it and move forward," Barrera said.
Both businesses expect the customer traffic to increase as January continues.
