East Texas doctor becomes nation's 1st interventional cardiologist to implant leadless pacemaker system

Dr. Samir Germanwala, chairman of cardiology at Longview Regional Medical Center, performed the groundbreaking advancement in East Texas this spring.

LONGVIEW, Texas — This year, an East Texas physician became the first interventional cardiologist in the country to implant a dual chamber leadless pacemaker.

It's a device that helps people with abnormal or slow heart rhythms while reducing the risk of lead- and pocket-related complications.

Dr. Samir Germanwala, chairman of cardiology at Longview Regional Medical Center, performed the groundbreaking advancement in East Texas this spring at the Heart and Vascular Institute at LRMC, making him the first interventional cardiologist in the nation to complete the procedure.

“This system allows a minimally-invasive solution to address the needs of individuals requiring dual-chamber pacing (targeting both the right atrium and right ventricle) for optimal cardiac function,” Germanwla said. “This procedure significantly reduces the risk of lead- and pocket-related complications, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. We have placed about 50 devices to date with outstanding patient satisfaction. We are happy to offer the latest FDA approved technology to improve patient lives right here in Longview.”

These types of pacemakers allow leadless devices to be placed into the heart through a needle puncture in the groin, eliminating the need for an incision. LRMC said this approach is less restrictive and has quicker recovery period post-implantation.

LRMC's Heart and Vascular Institute is the only facility that places these pacemakers in Longview.

“At Longview Regional Medical Center, we are committed to helping people live healthier. We are dedicated to providing the latest cardiology advancements right here in our community. By offering these advanced cardiac care services close to home, we ensure that our patients don't have to travel far to receive the high-quality treatment they deserve,” said Steve Gordon, Longview Regional Medical Center CEO.
