East Texas man awarded $4.5 million after lawsuit

The man filed a lawsuit after the incident.

RUSK, Texas — A Rusk jury awarded Jerry Thomas $4.5 million Sept. 19 after a lawsuit contested the sawmill he worked for created an unsafe environment, leading to an incident resulting in the loss of his hand.

“This verdict reflects the seriousness of Jerry Thomas's injury and the negligence that caused it,” Lead Attorney Daniel Gibbins said. “Justice has been served for Mr. Thomas, and we are proud to have helped him secure the compensation he needs to rebuild his life after this tragic incident.”

Thomas' team aggressively pursued concerns over the equipment and safety procedures against the Antonio Munoz Asseradero, LLC, who owned the sawmill responsible for the incident.

The team believes the case will influence other safety protocols, preventing incidents similar to Thomas' in the future.
