JACKSONVILLE (KYTX) - Recent drownings in local lakes serve as a reminder to keep it safe on lakes. Rozalyn Walker's 7-year-old granddaughter, Serenity Johnson, had a near drowning experience at Gladewater lake.
"She will tell you herself," said Walker, "She thought she was in the right spot... and then she wasn't."
Luckily, Serenity made it. But not everyone is as lucky. On Sunday, a 23-year-old man, Mario Burns, died at Lake Jacksonville after drowning 10-15 feet from where he was last seen by friends.
"If it's too hot to cold and extremes like that your body doesn't react as well as it normally would," said Yount.
He also said you should always wear a life jacket if you aren't the best swimmer... and always remember to supervise children. Something Rozalyn is also pushing for.
"It's important just to make sure we are watching our kids when their in the water," she said.
