Athens man arrested after 12 dogs rescued from cruelty site, 4 dogs dead

Malnourishment, flea infestations, ear infections and fight-related injuries were apparent in the rescued dogs, but displayed no viscous tendencies.

ATHENS, Texas — One man is is in custody after animal rescue crews recovered 12 emaciated dogs from a cruelty site in Henderson County.

Henderson Coutny Animal Control and Athens Animal Services executed an overnight rescue operation, according to Athens Animal Services. They successfully retrieved 12 emaciated dogs from a cruelty site in Athens. Five dogs were found dead at the location.

The rescued animals were suffering from neglect and deprivation, according to Athens Animal Services. Malnourishment, flea infestations, ear infections and fight-related injuries were apparent in the rescued dogs, but displayed no viscous tendencies.

HSCO arrested Jerry Fontenot, 59, and charged him with cruelty to animals by neglect and animal cruelty causing death. His bond has been set at $26,000.

"On the occasion of Athens Animal Services' Grand Opening, with the shelter already at capacity, we kindly request donations of lams food, toys, supplies, or monetary contributions to sustain our community services."
