SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Smith County officials are urging residents to report damage from Thursday night's storms to state agencies.
"To Smith County residents who suffered damages in last night’s storm: please use the Texas Division of Emergency Management portal to report any damages," county officials said. "Please remember that reporting damage to this portal does not replace the need to contact your insurance company if you received major damages. You must allow your location to be tracked when using the portal for specific location information."
Smith County Road and Bridge crews are working diligently to clear roads with downed trees in the Bullard and Emerald Bay areas.
Smith County Engineer Frank Davis says there were about 20 county roads that had downed trees following the storms.
"There have been crews working throughout the night to clear the roads," Davis said. "Many roads still have trees on them but at least one lane has been cleared for drivers to pass through."
If you're a Smith County resident who lives on a county road, place storm debris in the right-of-way of the county road (not on the road) and crews will pick it up.
"It may take several days to be picked up," the county said. "Smith County Road and Bridge crews will only pick up storm debris left in the right-of-way of county roads. They cannot go on private property or pick up debris on city or state roads."
Officials say reporting damage also lets Smith County Emergency Operations know what people living in damaged areas need.
