CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas — The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office has issued 50 citations, including one for an East Texas county commissioner, and arrested one man after a cockfighting ring bust in May.
Cherokee County Sheriff Brent Dickson said Steven Lindsey has been charged with cockfighting, which is a Class A misdemeanor, after officials responded to reports of suspicious activity on County Road 2638 on May 23.
When deputies arrived on scene, they found evidence indicating a cockfighting derby had taken place and approximately 50 people were identified.
Deputies have issued 50 citations so far. Among those cited was Morris County Pct. 4 Commissioner Todd Freeman, Dickson said.
The sheriff's office is also seeking to issue nine warrants for those accused of participating in the ring. A former Houston County commissioner is one of the nine other people wanted for allegedly being a part of the cockfighting.
During the investigation, two trucks, nine trailers, and 97 roosters were seized.
