City of Tyler wins East Texas Food Bank peanut butter drive

A strong online order push from the Rose City pushed them to the finish line.

TYLER, Texas — The East Texas Food Bank announced Monday the City of Tyler won the Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive over Longview.

Tyler raised 20,202 jars of peanut butter over Longview's 18,393, however the runner-ups raised more physical jars, totaling 13,365 to Tyler's 2,579. The Rose City's strong online order push brought them past their fellow East Texas city to the finish line. Together, the two towns raised nearly 40,000 jars of peanut butter.

“Everyone is a winner in this friendly competition because the food and funds collected will help East Texans in need,” said ETFB Chief Impact Officer Kim Morris. “The peanut butter and funds we collected is helping us fill the shelves of our pantry partners in Longview and Tyler. We are so thankful to everyone who participated in this event. Each jar represents a family who will be able to have nutritious food that is high in protein.”

The drive, brought on by Tyler Mayor Don Warren and Longview Mayor Kristen Ishihara, is part of the communities fight during Hunger Action Month, which takes place during September. The competition ran from Sept. 5 to 27.

Hunger Action Month is held during September to bring awareness about food insecurity in the community.

“We would like to say a special thank you to Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods and Fresh stores in Tyler and Longview for offering drop-off locations for the peanut butter,” Morris said. “Also we want to thank all of the businesses, individuals, churches, and schools in both cities for holding their own drives to benefit East Texans. This campaign brought our communities together for the unified cause of Fighting Hunger and Feeding Hope.”
