City of Murchison issues safety notice after gallons of sewage spills into creek

The city of Murchison said the leak is now plugged and the sewer is getting rerouted until repairs can be made next week to the sewer main.

The city of Murchison reported an estimated up to 600,000 gallons of sewage has spilled into Little Duncan Branch Creek.

According to a safety notice, around 2:15 p.m. Monday, someone reported seeing sewer leaking from the creek crossing and further investigation found erosion caused the sewer main to wash out, which led to the sewage releasing into the creek. Based on the last significant rainfall date, the city believes the leak happened around July 18, but the exact date or time is unknown.

People who use private drinking water supply wells, located within a half mile of the Little Duncan  Branch Creek and FM 773 intersection, should only use water that has been distilled or boiled at a rolling boil for at least one minute for all personal uses including drinking, cooking,  bathing and tooth brushing.

Anyone who has private water wells should have their well water tested and disinfected, if needed, before stopping distillation or boiling. The public water supply for the city of Murchison is safe for personal use.

While it's estimated that 600,000 gallons spilled, the actual spill could be less depending on how the pipe separated and when that actually happened. The city of Murchison said the leak is now plugged and the sewer is getting rerouted until repairs can be made next week to the sewer main.

People should avoid contact with waste material, soil or water in the area that has been potentially affected by the spill.
