City of Kilgore warns of taste, odor changes in water during temporary disinfectant conversion

According to the city's Facebook page, the conversion will begin Wednesday, Nov. 1 and will last for 45 to 60 days.

KILGORE, Texas — City of Kilgore residents may notice a change in the taste and odor in their water as crews convert the disinfectant used in the distribution system from chloramine to free chlorine.

According to the city's Facebook page, the conversion will begin Wednesday, Nov. 1 and will last for 45 to 60 days.  Customers may experience taste and odor changes because of the change during this time.

The city of Kilgore said in its notice prolonged use of chloramine coupled with other factors that can affect water quality like high temperatures or stagnation of water can result in the growth and/or persistence of organic matter in the pipes of the distribution system.

A temporary conversion to free chlorine along with flushing activities helps remove the organic matter in the pipes and improve the quality of water overall.

"We have chosen to implement a temporary disinfectant conversion to free chlorine based on increasing water quality complaints and decreasing chloramine residuals," the city of Kilgore said.
