Children learn about pet ownership at Longview animal shelter camp

The event is hosted by Longview PAWS, short for “Pets Are Worth Saving,” the nonprofit organization that supports the city-run animal shelter.

LONGVIEW, Texas — He can play piano, strum the ukulele, pick out cards from a deck, pretend he’s been shot and push all of the right buttons. He’s a Boston Terrier named Memphis Presley. And yes, his dad’s name was Elvis.

On Wednesday, the black-and-white musical mutt took center stage at the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center for the first day of Camp PAW-some, a new educational event for children.

The two-day camp is designed to teach children ages 6 through 12 about the basic responsibilities of pet ownership and is filled with animal-related arts and crafts activities. The event is hosted by Longview PAWS, short for “Pets Are Worth Saving,” the nonprofit organization that supports the city-run animal shelter. Children had to be pre-enrolled to participate.
