Girl killed in Smith County crash identified as Tyler ISD elementary school student

Laiyah Gene Mitchell, 7, was killed in a crash Sunday evening on SH 64 W.

TYLER, Texas — Tyler ISD's Dixie Elementary School is mourning the loss of a second classmate just this year.

Laiyah Gene Mitchell, 7, was killed in a crash Sunday evening on SH 64 W.

"We are saddened to have lost another Dixie Dragon making our second within a month," the Dixie Elementary PTA posted to Facebook. "Please pray for Laiyah's family, friends and school during this hard time."

Exactly a month ago, on Jan. 4, Kylie Medeiros, 9, was also killed in a crash. Officials say Mederios' mother, Krystle, was drunk when she caused the wreck.

A public viewing for Mitchell will be held Friday, Feb. 9, at Community Funeral Home, located at 1429 N. Border Ave. in Tyler from 3:30-7 p.m. The homecoming celebration will take place Saturday, Feb. 10, at God's Will Missionary Baptist Church, located at 3043 McDonald Rd. in Tyler at noon. She will be buried at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

A GoFundMe has been created for the family to help pay for funeral expenses.
