Cherokee County dispatcher given Hero Award after playing major role in saving woman at gunpoint

Dispatcher Mollie McCalister saw through the woman's fake eye prescription story, leading her to safety, and the arrest of her husband.

TYLER, Texas — Cherokee County Sheriff Brent Dickson presented Mollie McCalister with a Hero Award Tuesday for her role in saving a woman held at gunpoint by her husband.

On Aug. 26, a woman called 911, asking about her child's eye prescription. McCalister, a dispatcher for the sheriff's office, answered the call. She saw through the façade, and managed to keep the woman calm, while pulling enough information to get deputies to the car she was in at the time of the call.

The woman escaped the situation safely upon the arrival of deputies, who found the car on a county road. Her husband was taken into custody upon arrival. Police confirmed the man had an AR-15 along with methamphetamine during the arrest.

"Thank you to Dispatcher McCalister for a job well done!" Dickson said.
