SMITH COUNTY — A Chapel Hill teacher was arrested Tuesday after allegedly inhaling fumes from an aerosol can.
According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, a deputy working at the high school as a school resource officer saw a man passed out inside a vehicle in the school's parking lot.
Deputies removed the man, later identified as 38-year-old Charles Applegate, from the vehicle. Applegate was conscious, but deputies said he had vomited on himself.
The sheriff's office says Applegate inhaled the fumes from the aerosol can to intoxicate himself.
Applegate, who is a teacher for the district, was arrested and transported to the Smith County Jail. He faces charges of public intoxication and possession of inhalants.
Applegate was released from jail Wednesday.
On the Chapel Hill ISD website, Applegate is listed by his middle name David Applegate. There is no information on what he teaches currently listed on the site.
