Capital murder trial of man charged in officer's death moved to Gregg County

Newson has been held in the Gregg County Jail since Feb. 27, 2020. His bonds are set at $8 million.

LONGVIEW, Texas — The trial of a man accused of fatally shooting a Panola County sheriff's deputy has been moved to Gregg County.

The first Gregg County-set hearing in Gregory Newson’s capital murder case is set Monday morning in Judge Alfonso Charles’ 124th District Court, court records show.

Newson is charged with capital murder of a peace officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, all stemming from the Dec. 31, 2019, shooting death of Deputy Chris Dickerson during a traffic stop near Gary.
