A Tyler ISD principal has been recognized by a national committee for his school leadership.

Bobby Markle, the principal of Caldwell Arts Academy, was recognized by the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership for 2024. The award was presented by U.S Secretary of Education Miguel A. Cardona and honors school leaders who foster excellence in education and leave a positive impact on their school communities, according to Tyler ISD.

"Dr. Markle has transformed Caldwell Arts Academy into a state and nationally-recognized fine arts magnet school, leading with innovation, vision, and a deep commitment to student success," Jennifer Hines, Tyler ISD chief communications officer, said in a release. "Under his leadership, Caldwell has become a hub for arts integration and academic excellence, offering students a wide array of creative opportunities while maintaining high academic standards."

Since becoming principal, Markle has expanded the arts program at Caldwell to encompass nearly 50 different arts courses, including music production, jewelry making and digital arts while promoting unique opportunities among the student body, including showcasing their work through a mobile marketplace and participating in local craft fairs and art shows.

“Getting this award alongside our campus National Blue Ribbon Award is a testament to the community that has created a truly special place for students and staff to excel," Markle said. "As leaders, principals are driven by how their work impacts the educational opportunities of our kids, and having people recognize that at a national level is something we only dream of when we start our careers. Truly, thank you to Tyler ISD and Caldwell Arts Academy for letting me develop a shared vision alongside amazing educators. It’s a story that deserves recognition!”
