TYLER, Texas — A long-standing park in Tyler was given the distinction as a “Great Public Space” by the American Planning Association on Thursday.
Bergfeld Park has served the Tyler community for 110 years, and now is earning an official recognition as a great public space.
It’s the second great place named in the Rose City, joining the Tyler Rose Garden. Numerous updates and changes have come to the park in the last ten years, helping it to grow alongside the community.
"And you think about that park being built in the 1930s, and what it meant to Tyler then. It’s had this history of longevity, as well as improvements always having to take care of it and keep it a part of this community," Tyler Deputy City Manager Stephanie Franklin said.
In the last ten years Bergfeld Park has built a new playground, an amphitheater, splash pads for kids, as well as tennis and pickleball courts.
The American Planning Association is recognizing Bergfeld Park because of these renovations as well as for its accessibility, functionality and community involvement.
