Insect expert gives safety tips after yellowjackets sting East Texas man hundreds of times

To prevent getting stung, Garett Slater, an apiculture extension entomologist, suggested being observant and to keep an eye out for potential hazards.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas — A Cherokee County man remains in the hospital after he was stung by a swarm of yellowjackets Monday in the Rusk area.

Officials believe he was stung by yellowjackets hundreds of times while riding a tractor in the pasture. The incident happened near Moon City Road. His exact condition is unknown, but he was flown to the hospital.

To prevent getting stung, Garett Slater, an apiculture extension entomologist, suggested being observant and to keep an eye out for potential hazards, such as a line of flying insects coming out from under a shed or from a hole in the wall.

"If you do disrupt that colony you could have thousands of bees pursuing you and potentially stinging you, and really if you get more than 10 to 20 bee stings that can be extremely deadly," Slater said.
