State report reveals cause of Smith County Jail inmate's death

Susan Taylor, 58, fainted in the day room of the Smith County Jail and she was not responsive, according to the report.

TYLER, Texas — A report from the Texas Office of Attorney General has revealed that a Smith County Jail inmate who died last week passed away from natural causes. 

Susan Taylor, 58, fainted in the day room of the Smith County Jail  on Dec. 27 and she was not responsive, according to the report. The Smith County Sheriff's Office said medical personnel administered CPR and automated external defibrillator. 

She regained electric function in her heart and she was taken to a Tyler hospital. When she was at the hospital, she lost her pulse again. She was then pronounced dead, according to the OAG report. 

Her cause of death was determined to be a pulmonary embolism resulting from a pre-existing medical condition, the report showed. 

An autopsy was ordered. Per Smith County Sheriff's Office protocol, the Texas Rangers is investigating the death. 

Taylor had been in the Smith County Jail since March 27 on assault charges, according to jail records.
