TYLER — With the rain the last few weeks, armyworms have been making their way across East Texas.
"That's why they call them armies, armyworms because they just march across the field like an army and destroy everything in its path," said Smith County Ag Extension Agent Clint Perkins.
Steeles' Feed & Seed store owner, Cindy Steele, in Flint said that since July, she's had about 150 customers come into the store looking for a solution.
"It's really probably the worst in the 32 years we've had the store that we've seen," Steele said.
Steele said they've even destroyed her husband's hay crops.
"If you cut some hay the armyworms would come and chew up all the grass and they can take your yard in the matter of a day," Steele said.
Steeles' Feed & Seed sells many items including pesticides for armyworms, but that it's the one thing she 'could care if we never sold.
"If it sat there and gathered dust and never sold because it affects us all," Steele said.
Perkins recommends pesticides like Malathion 57%, Mustang Max, Tracer, Sevin 4F, Dimilin 2L, Prevathon and more. He also said people should read the label and follow directions before using any pesticide.
When spraying the pesticide people should spray not just the grass, but also the worms.
"It is so tall right now that if you didn't get the spray on the worms that were down below when they come up on top to eat it's not going to kill them," Steele said.
East Texas is might be getting more rain soon, along with another flush of worms.
