LONGVIEW, Texas — Adversity was the theme of the sermon Sunday at Oakland Heights Baptist Church, whose landmark steeple was toppled last week by severe weather, leaving a hole in the Central Longview church’s roof and flooding the sanctuary.
The Rev. Michael Cook, the church’s senior pastor, compared the adversity faced by the church, its members and other area residents with that faced by Biblical figures such as Moses, who led his people out of Egypt to present-day Israel, and the Apostle Paul, who was stoned and left for dead.
“On this given morning, God has our attention,” Cook said.
