3 East Texas counties approved for transitional sheltering assistance in response to Hurricane Beryl

Eligible applicants will have most lodging costs paid for by FEMA.

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott announced last week that three East Texas counties were approved for FEMA's Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program in response to the impact of Hurricane Beryl.

In a press release on July 24, the governor's office said Jasper, Nacogdoches, and Polk counties were among the 17 counties across the state to be approved for the program, which will assist Texans unable to return to their damaged homes and have housing needs not met by insurance, shelters or rental assistance.

"The approval of 17 Texas counties ... will help ensure Texans have access to the support they need to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Beryl," Abbott said.

Under the TSA, those staying at participating hotels and motels will have most of their lodging costs covered by FEMA. These include room rates, taxes and some pet fees.

FEMA has also approved a request from the Texas government to waive an assistance requirement for individuals who purchased or rented a generator between July 5 and July 20.

People can apply for assistance online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling (800) 621-3362.
