SMITH COUNTY, Texas — A 16-year-old boy accused of shooting at law enforcement during a high-speed chase Monday morning has been charged with assault.

The teen was booked into the Smith County Juvenile Attention Center on an aggravated assault of a peace officer. He allegedly shot toward officers during the pursuit that spanned across Harrison, Gregg and Smith counties from a stolen vehicle out of Mississippi, Smith County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Larry Christian.

The driver of that vehicle, Bykearean Javar Green, 26, of Dallas, is charged with evading arrest with a vehicle in connection with the pursuit, Christian said. He is being held in the Smith County Jail on a $250,000 bond. Green was also shot during the chase, but it's unknown if the injury came from one of the suspects or law enforcement. He received treatment and was booked into the jail.

The third person in the vehicle was interviewed but not charged.

According to the sheriff's office, the pursuit began in Harrison County on Interstate 20 in connection with the stolen vehicle from Mississippi. Smith County deputies stepped in around 9 a.m. and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers assisted.

The Lindale Police Department was notified as well and deputies were trying to set up spikes to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then headed down Jim Hogg Road, but got back on US Highway 69 and returned back to Interstate 20, heading westbound, the SCSO said.

Passengers in the vehicle fired shots at deputies during the pursuit from the back glass of the vehicle, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said.

DPS Sgt. Adam Albritton said there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect vehicle and Smith County Pct. 5 Constable's Office while the chase was in the Lindale area.

The vehicle kept going west on I-20 and came up on the way station on I-20. The car ultimately went off the road west of the station and rolled over into a telephone pole near mile marker 545.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the officer-involved shooting, while the Smith County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shots fired at the deputies.
