TYLER, Texas — Three people accused of leading law enforcement on a pursuit from Louisiana into Smith County with a stolen car were arrested Monday morning.
Everl Cardenas, 23, Terrence Boley, 18, and Christopher Powell, 18, were all charged with evading arrest. Other charges are expected, the Smith County Sheriff's Office said Monday.
The sheriff's office said officers began the pursuit in Minden, Louisiana when they heard of a gray Chevy Camaro that was stolen out of Dallas. The vehicle evaded Louisiana officials and they were later spotted around 11:45 a.m. by Gregg County deputies.
Gregg County deputies started a brief pursuit on Interstate 20 until they reached the Smith County line. Smith County deputies took over the pursuit that continued on I-20. A Smith County Pct. 5 deputy constable deployed a spike strip on the suspect vehicle at I-20 and US Highway 69 North, the SCSO said.
Officials said the suspects in the car continued to evade and exited I-20 at Toll 49. Officers lost sight of the car, but then they found the vehicle abandoned on County Road 4155. Someone told law enforcement that they saw the three suspects run from the vehicle southbound into a field, according to the sheriff's office.
A perimeter was established and after a K-9 tracked them, the suspects were found running into a wooded area adjacent to the field. Soon after, all three of them were taken into custody., the sheriff's office said. No one was injured during the pursuit.
"This is a great example of interagency cooperation with multiple Smith County agencies as well as the Gregg County Sheriff’s Office," the Smith County Sheriff's Office said.
