Officials investigating after 2 horses go missing in Smith County

The Smith County Sheriff's Office says both horses are 8-months-old, weigh about 500 lbs. and are not branded.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — The Smith County Sheriff's Office and Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Ranger Larry Hand are investigating after two colt draft horses went missing near Winona in Smith County. 

"The red roan has one white front foot and one partially white hind foot," the SCSO said. "The blue roan has a star and snip on the face with two white hind feet."

The SCSO says both horses are 8-months-old, weigh about 500 lbs. and are not branded. 

Officials say on Saturday, Jan. 6, the horses were spooked and jumped over the owner’s fence into a rural area.

"Estray livestock remain the property of the original owner and must be reported to the local sheriff's office in your county," the SCSO said. "Taking ownership of these animals may constitute Theft of Livestock (Texas Penal Code 31.03 5(A), a third degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison."
