NEW YORK — Two East Texans have made it to the biggest stage in Major League Baseball -- the World Series!
The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are facing off for the 12th time in the World Series, according to the Associated Press.
Duke Ellis, a Central Heights High School in Nacogdoches graduate, is an outfielder for the Yankees and Michael Kopech, a Mount Pleasant High School graduate, is a pitcher for the Dodgers.
Ellis, 26, began his collegiate baseball career at Panola College, but later transferred to UT Austin after his freshman year. He made his professional debut in June this year with the Chicago White Sox. He then joined the Yankees in August.
Ellis is also the son of Robert Ellis, who was an MLB pitcher for four different teams, including the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In addition to high school successes, Kopech, 28, played for the University of Arizona. He made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Chicago White Sox. He left the team when he was traded to Dodgers in July this year.
According to an MLB article, Kopech said in a 2019 interview that he and Whitehouse native and now Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes were baseball rivals while they played the sport back in East Texas.
This will be the Yankees first World Series appearance since 2009, while the Dodgers have made it to the World Series four times since 2017.
