SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Two people are dead after a plane crashed Wednesday evening in northern Smith County.
According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, they assisted the Texas Department of Public Safety after the Cozy single-engine plane crashed near Mineola on private property near Burleson Lake. The crash reportedly occurred sometime between 7-11 p.m.
At this time, officials have confirmed two males from the Powderly area were killed in the incident. Their ages and identities have not been released.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is sending an investigator to the scene and a preliminary report is expected within 30 days of the accident.
"The preliminary report will contain factual information gathered during the initial phase of the investigation," the NTSB said. "A probable cause of the crash, along with any contributing factors, will be detailed in the final report, which is expected in 12-24 months."
The NTSB is asking those who witnessed the crash or those who may have surveillance video are asked to contact the officials at witness@ntsb.gov.
