TYLER, Texas — Two brothers accused of being involved with a dog fighting ring in Smith County appeared in court Wednesday afternoon.
Kerry Jones, 34, and his brother Michael Cameron Jones, 31, both of Tyler, made their first court appearance since their arrest last week. The brothers are charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals and dog fighting. Both remain in the Smith County Jail on bonds totaling over $1 million.
Dozens of animal rights supporters showed up to the courthouse to voice their support for the dogs and spread awareness of the case. Rescuers say the dogs can't be adopted out at this point because they are considered evidence, and many are in need of medical care.
An arrest affidavit alleged law enforcement and animal control observed several dogs to be locked in cages and malnourished. Many of the dogs had fresh injuries and visible blood and scars consistent with fighting. A search warrant executed by Smith County officials at Kerry's home found nearly 60 pit bull-type dogs with various injuries. Michael identified himself as a co-owner of the property to law enforcement.
Authorities also found:
- Three treadmills altered for use by dogs
- Two bite sticks used to break a dog's fight with bite marks showing they had been used
- Weighted collars used to strengthen fighting dogs
- Multiple empty vials and syringes of canine medicines including tranquilizer
- A building containing what appeared to be a fighting arena
The address had reportedly been under investigation for previous reports of a possible dog fighting ring, but could not find any dogs or evidence on the property until Sept. 9.
The next hearing is set for Sept. 26.
