HENDERSON COUNTY, Texas — Fifteen puppies that were among two litters abandoned at the Lake Palestine Motor Inn in late May have come a long way in their recovery. Some of them are even ready for adoption locally.
It's thanks to the efforts of three animal rescues, including East Texas nonprofit Angel Paws Advocates, who stepped in to help keep the dogs alive.
Lynn Harty, one of Angel Paws Advocates' co-founders, explained the puppies were in poor condition when they were found on May 31. One of the puppies was taken by someone around the motel and Harty said they later learned that dog died.
Out of the 15 dogs, Harty said that one had to go to the vet three times. He received a blood transfusion and fluids to keep him alive.
"We literally brought him back to life," Harty said.
Out of the remaining 15 we had, Angel Paws has five left in their care with a foster family. The two other rescues, which are located in Minnesota and on the East Coast, have the other 10 dogs, Harty said.
"Everyone's doing well. We haven't heard anything negative," she said.
She added the five pups at Angel Paws are ready for adoption and people interested can apply at angelpawsadvocates.com.
The Henderson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the dumping incident. Sheriff Botie Hillhouse said a dark colored truck dropped the puppies at the motel. He said there have been a couple of leads in the case. Investigators are looking into two people and trying to narrow down to see who actually left the dogs.
Hillhouse asked anyone with information to call the sheriff's office at (903) 675-5128.
Harty also mentioned a litter of five puppies and their mother were found at Lake Palestine on Thursday. She said that Angel Paws is need in foster families as well.
