Female juvenile arrested after allegedly making threats against area school districts

According to Henderson Police Department, There were five schools named in the social media threat: Chapel Hill, Henderson, Overton, West Rusk and Kilgore

OVERTON, Texas — The Smith County Sheriff's Office arrested a female juvenile who investigators say made a social media threat against five area school districts.

The threats began on Saturday and were made against the following districts:

  • West Rusk ISD
  • Henderson ISD
  • Chapel Hill ISD
  • Kilgore ISD
  • Overton ISD

On Monday, the Smith County Sheriff's Office, along with several local state and federal agencies, identified and arrested the person they say is responsible.

The juvenile was taken to Rusk County and turned over to juvenile authorities. The Henderson Police Department says the female is still with Rusk County juvenile authorities as of Tuesday afternoon.

The threat came in the form of an Instagram post, according to local school administrators. 

Kilgore police determined the threat was not credible. 

Kilgore ISD will continue security measures with law enforcement at all campuses throughout the week while the investigation is still ongoing.

Overton ISD released the following statement:

"OISD would like to thank all law enforcement involved in this case, especially the Overton Police Department for being so conscientious in providing security on campus. Also, the employees and students of OISD performed in an outstanding manner during the situation, maintaining a positive and caring atmosphere and following directives that enabled the district to continue to function even during the unusual conditions. All absences for Monday, April 1 will be excused on all campuses in the district. Parents will not have to send a note with the student for a Monday absence."
