CONROE (KYTX) - After more than 8 hours of deliberations, the jury in the so-called baby exorcism trial decides Blaine Milam should be put to death for killing 13-month-old Amora Carson. Amora was found with more than 20 bite marks on her body and was also sexually assaulted when Milam was trying to perform an exorcism on her. CBS 19's Amanda Kost spoke with a juror who shared how they came to decide Blaine Milam's fate.
Shackled with his head down and staring blankly, Blaine Milam wouldn't say a word after learning he was headed to death row for beating 13 month old Amora Carson to death during an exorcism - but the man who lost his granddaughter did speak. For Richard Mutina, sharing his loss with the jury brings the family one step closer to closure.
"I spoke for Amora and I spoke for my family, and everything I said came from my heart," said Mutina.
A jury of six men and six women decided Milam's fate. Juror Eva Harris says it was a decision that weighed heavy on her heart. "You know to have to tell somebody they're going to lose their life. It was very hard but I think the jury served justice for Amora," said Harris just after the sentence came down.
Harris, along with the other jurors, packed their bags and put their lives on hold for a month filled with emotional testimony.
"It's something that nobody would ever forget. I never, never expected to see what I had to see...The only comfort that I have is that baby is no longer hurting. She was tortured and we can't bring her back but she's no longer hurting and she's in a better place," said Harris.
Milam is heading for anything but a better place - a small cell with solid walls, no TV, no air conditioning, no privacy - Texas death row, in Livingston.
Amora's mother, Jesseca Carson, is locked in a Rusk County Jail cell right now. She is awaiting her own capital murder trial slated for next year.
