JACKSONVILLE, Texas — Recently named one of the state's must-see football stadiums by Dave Campbell's 'Texas Football,' the Tomato Bowl in Jacksonville is getting some much needed upgrades.
Construction crews are in the final stages of renovations, which are expected to be completed by early April.
"I think people are going to be amazed," Grace Traylor, Jacksonville ISD Public Relations Director, said, "I've been amazed at watching the process. I had no idea it could be done like this."
This is only the second time the 80-year-old stadium has undergone renovations. It's part of a $20 million bond package, which passed with overwhelming community support in 2017.
"When our superintendent came in, he just thought if we were going to do it, we're going to do it right," Traylor explained.
The changes are meant to preserve the old, while also installing some much-needed upgrades.
The original stadium walls have been preserved. Construction crews also salvaged a Texas shaped rock, embedded in the low brick facing the field. Be on the lookout for the rock, which will be displayed in the new facility.
Some of the most noticeable changes include new bleachers, capable of seating 8,300 people. The stadium's field is also being replaced with turf.
New concessions stands and restrooms were installed to accommodate the increased capacity.
A completely new press box and video scoreboard have also been added.
While this year's senior class may not have been able to play football at the bowl, they will be the first to walk across it for graduation in May.
"We promised the seniors this year, since they missed their football season," Traylor said.
According to Traylor, the district is planning a grand opening concert in June. Jacksonville native Neal McCoy is expected to perform.
