ABILENE (KYTX) – A Jacksonville teenager is dead after a crash in West Texas claimed his life Saturday morning.

The crash happened on Interstate 20 in Abilene around 6:30 a.m., according to the local police department.

Authorities say Hunter Vess, 19, of Jacksonville, was westbound on the interstate and passed another vehicle in the inside lane. After passing the other vehicle the Chevy pickup merged back into the outside lane.

The witness reported Vess drove off the road in the outside median into the grass where he lost control. He then re-entered the roadway where the vehicle began to roll. The vehicle traveled back into the grass median where the driver was ejected.

Vess was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It is unknown if drugs and alcohol were a factor in this crash at this time. Authorities say Vess was not wearing his seatbelt.

The investigation is ongoing.
