LONGVIEW, Texas — An important piece of American history has landed in East Texas as the Gregg County Historical Museum debuted its NASA: Beyond Earth A History of the Apollo Missions, Manned Space Flight, and the Future exhibit on Tuesday.
Through Aug. 26, you can see many historic items such as posters and memorabilia from the moon landing. Among them, is the space suit worn by Buzz Aldrin as he stepped foot on the moon for the first time in history.
Executive Director Lindsay Loy says the exhibit will also feature many East Texas ties to space.
"We also have posters (of) four people who are from Gregg County who work at NASA or formerly worked at NASA," Loy said. "Mr. Nelson Bates, he worked on the lunar lander. He will be one of our first speakers for a free lecture serious that we will have every third Thursday of the month. We have Martha Walker, she was one of the first female programmers in NASA in the 1970s. Misty Pierson, she currently works at NASA and does the payload for the International Space Station."
The exhibit will also feature Manuel Rodriguez, one of the designers of the Apollo space suit.
The museum plans on having events all spring and summer long, including a rocket decorating and launching day. In addition, you'll get the opportunity to star gaze with teachers from Longview ISD and professors from LeTourneau University.
