POLK COUNTY, Texas — A federal grand jury indicted a Polk County man for federal firearms violations.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, a gran jury charged James Vincent Chaney, 32, with possession of an unregistered destructive device and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
According to the indictment, on Feb. 27, Chaney is alleged to have been found in possession of an unregistered destructive and a firearm at his home.
The Attorney’s Office says the investigation revealed Chaney had been previously convicted for forgery back in 2017 in Montgomery County. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.
The Attorney’s Office says if convicted, Chaney will face up to 10 years in federal prison on each charge.
The case is being prosecuted as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative. The project is aimed at reducing gun and gang violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, ammunition and body armor, and improving the safety of residents in the Eastern District of Texas.
The Attorney’s Office says the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and prosecuted is assisting in the investigation.
