SHERIFF: Former deputy charged with theft, abuse of official capacity in Panola County

"The events are disappointing, but our team handled the situation with the professionalism and protocol necessary," Sheriff Cutter Clinton said.

PANOLA COUNTY, Texas — A former deputy accused of violating policies at the Panola County Sheriff's Office has been charged with abuse of official capacity and theft.

According to the Panola County Sheriff's Office, an investigation into an employee violating the policies started in March 2023.

During the investigation, administrators gathered information and evidence about the violations that indicated possible criminal violations, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputy Torey McLemore, of Carthage, was identified as the employee and after an interview, he was placed on suspension based on the PCSO policy. He has been charged with abuse of official capacity and theft, which are both Class C misdemeanors, the PCSO said.

He gave his resignation Monday before getting booked into the Panola County Detention Center, the sheriff's office said.

The Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers has taken over the investigation.

Jail records show McLemore bonded out of jail Monday.

"The events are disappointing, but our team handled the situation with the professionalism and protocol necessary," Sheriff Cutter Clinton said.
