LONGVIEW -- About 100 of the best and brightest high school students from around the country are competing Feb. 9 at LeTourneau University in Longview for one of 10 Heritage Scholarships, valued at more than $96,000 per student over four years. Of this group, 53 are class valedictorians and 10 of them are National Merit Finalists.

The Heritage Scholarship is the university's premier scholarship which is applied toward tuition costs and is renewable for up to eight semesters, as long as winners maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 and meet scholarship requirements.

To qualify to attend the invitation-only event, these high school students from all over the country are required to have scored a 1300 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT exam and have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 3.65. The students compete by writing essays and participating in a team-building leadership challenge judged by LETU faculty and staff and former Heritage Scholarship winners. The students competing this year plan to major in engineering, aviation, business, the arts and sciences. During their visit for the competition, students and their parents will participate in tours, student life seminars and attend classes and chapel services.

"These students are in the top tier academically and would be able to compete on any Ivy League campus," said Steve Condon, LETU vice president for Enrollment Services. "All of our participants have full-tuition scholarships or more in hand at prestigious institutions around the world. They are led to LeTourneau to pursue their call to service and to continue their walk with Jesus. These are very special students and parents visiting a very special university."

LeTourneau University is an interdenominational Christ-centered university located in Longview, Texas, offering academic majors in aviation, business, criminal justice, education, engineering, health science-nursing, human services, liberal arts, science and psychology.
