Veterans Angel Tree event returns to grant Christmas wishes

TYLER, Texas — An East Texas veterans home is getting into the holiday spirit with an annual tradition.

The Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home in Tyler is celebrating the holidays with its iconic Veterans Angel Tree event. The event began in 2019 when a resident expressed his wish for a friend to share the holiday with.

This special Christmas tree is decorated with stockings filled with wish lists by veterans who are hoping for a gift this holiday season.

From now until Dec. 18, locals can pick up a stocking and come back with a special gift for a veteran by Dec. 22. Participants may adopt as many veterans they wish.

Last Friday, interested participants picked up 100 stockings that are filled with wish lists from veterans.

"If you were hoping to get one, don’t fret, there is a second tree in the Winona City Hall that still has veterans to be adopted," said Brian Wilson, director of activities at Watkins–Logan Texas State Veterans Home.

Due to the quick adoptions this year, Wilson said they're adding a new twist to the event. Locals can donate gifts to a Christmas store where veterans can pick out the gifts on their own.

"If they want to donate for that, these guys can come out and purchase items for themselves or they (can) purchase for a loved one, you know if they want to purchase for a friend. It’s a way to kind of say thanks," Wilson said.

Wilson said veterans will purchase the gifts with activity points earned at the home.

If you want to donate to the store, make sure to drop off the gifts this Friday, Dec. 8. If you would like to personally drop off your gift at the home, make sure to do it by Dec. 22.
